Avandia Injury Litigation

Avandia, classified more generally as rosiglitazone, is a commonly used drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is made by GlaxoSmithKline, and first came on the market in 1999.
The drug works by improving insulin sensitivity. This means that it helps the body use its natural insulin better, by binding to the PPAR receptors in fat cells, and making the cells more responsive to insulin. This helps lower blood sugar, and keep it under better control.
While Avandia has helped countless people control their blood sugar, there are some serious side effects that have been observed in users throughout the drug’s existence.
Avandia and Heart Conditions
One study concluded that individuals taking Avandia were 43 percent more likely to have a heart attack.
Avandia and Liver Problems
A serious side effect associated with Avandia is hepatotoxicity, or chemically induced liver damage. Although the liver plays an important role in helping the body clear chemicals from its system, it is also susceptible to the toxins found in these agents.
Avandia and Stroke
Another study showed that Avandia patients were 27 percent more likely to suffer strokes, than those not taking the drug.
Avandia and Anemia
Studies have shown that nearly 2 percent of people taking Avandia had anemia as a side effect.
Other Minor Avandia Side Effects
- weight gain
- headaches
- slight changes in vision
- back pain
