An Increasing Need for UM Coverage
As Georgia increases its efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants, and to enact an Arizona-esque immigration law, one of the unintended effects that I believe will likely occur, is going to be an increase in the number of “hit and run” car wrecks. For example, if an undocumented alien causes a car wreck, and knows that they’re likely to be deported when the police respond to the accident, that driver may decide that he/she would rather flee the scene, than face the consequences. As a result, the injured car wreck victim could very likely be left without any recourse, unless they have UM coverage.
Do you know if have enough uninsured motorist (“UM”) coverage? It’s vital that you receive the most UM coverage to which you are entitled. This usually is equal to the amount of your liability coverage. Also, be sure to get the “Add On” type of UM coverage, which is an addition to any coverage that the liable driver who caused your wreck may have.
If you don’t have UM coverage, or if you’re not sure, talk to your agent today and get it added to your policy. One day you may be very glad that you did.
