Paxil Injury Litigation

paxil

Paxil is a popular anti-depressant drug brand, classified under the more general term, Paroxetine.  The drug is made by GlaxoSmithKline, and is used to treat:

  • Severe depression
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress syndrome
  • General anxiety

Paxil is one of several types of drugs known as “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors” (SSRI). The drug effects users by restoring the balance of serotonin in the brain, which improves mood and emotional stability.

Although Paxil has helped a great number of patients, it has also been known to have many serious side effects since it first appeared on the market in 1993.

Suicidal Tendencies and Paxil

The FDA mandates that all physicians that prescribe Paxil must monitor their patients closely for the first 12 weeks, as a slew of patients under the age of 24 reported having violent suicidal tendencies and thoughts while taking Paxil.

Paxil Side Effects on the Fetus

Only half a decade ago, the FDA, issued several Public Health Advisories regarding the birth defects related to Paxil. Study after study indicated that mothers who take Paxil while pregnant, expose their babies to a greater risk of heart birth defects, cranial birth defects, respiratory birth defects, and abdominal birth defects.

Paxil and Heart Birth Defects

U.S. and Swedish studies showed that exposure to Paxil in the first trimester of pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of heart birth defects. Most of the defects observed in these studies showed cases where the wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart was not completely developed.

Paxil and Abdominal Birth Defects

A National Birth Defects Prevention Study of infants showed that women who use SSRI-anti-depressants were more likely than those who did not, to have an infant with omphalocele (a condition where intestines or other abdominal organs protrude from the navel). Paxil in particular accounted for 36% of all SSRI exposures.

Paxil and Respiratory Birth Defects

Some studies have linked Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), a life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth of the newborn to consuming Paxil. Infants with PPHN have high pressure in their lung blood vessels and are not able to get enough oxygen into their bloodstream.

Paxil and Cranial Defects

Studies found an association with exposure to any SSRI-antidepressant and giving birth to an infant with craniosynostosis, which causes an abnormally shaped skull.

Minor Paxil Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
