Tips For Bicycle Safety

With the ever-growing need to keep our air clean, and conserve more resources, bicycling has become an increasingly popular way to get around, in recent years.  Although the bicycle has been in existence for over a century, people have only recently started to view it as sport, as well as a good source of exercise.  Since there are more bikes on the road though, almost 580,000 bike riders pay a visit to the emergency room every year.  On top of that, an unfortunate 800 bike riders die annually.  With all of these bike accidents, it’s plain to see that riders can be much more careful on their two-wheelers.

Bicycle Safety Basics

Bicycle training is the best way to prevent bike accidents.  Common instructors include parents, experienced riders, or a good community program.  Proper supervision of younger riders is a prerequisite.  Actually, it is recommended that young riders only ride in small specified areas.

Bicycle Safety Equipment

  • Helmets
  • Reflectors on frame and wheels
  • Reflective clothing
  • Bicycle maintenance tools (pump, wrench, oil)

Safety Guidelines:

Consider these things before you hop on your bike…

  • Properly assess your experience and skill before riding on public roads
  • Study the rules of the road.  Many of the rules that apply to cars also apply to bikes (stopping at stop signs, etc)
  • Ride with traffic on the right side of the road, not against it.
  • Never ride after drinking
  • Always yield the right-of-way
  • Maintain proper speed, sometimes if you’re too slow on a public road, it can be dangerous to you
  • Be aware of the understanding among bicyclists and motorists about sharing the road.
  • Use proper hand turning signal
  • Be ultra aware of your surroundings.  watch for open car doors, manholes, debris on the road, etc.
